Seeing this is a BMX forum then most BMX'ers might be curious about MTB'ing and MTB bikes, so if you have any simple questions out of curiousity then post them here and i'll reply ASAP.
And even if you what the cold hard facts about a bike or a part then i'll tell all i know.

Cheers guys,
Ben.

It depends what style of riding your doing (e.g. downhill, dirt jumping, cross country) but very popular brands are Giant, their STP series is very popular for entry level dirt jumping / street bikes, and for downhill they have the Glory DH series which is very popular aswell.
Then theres Norco, which have 4 main downhill bikes which range from 3000 to about 6000 dollars, and they have their dirt jumping range which is quite popular aswell.
There is also Ironhorse for downhill (they have the sunday series which Sam Hill the current world champ rides).

And then theres many more brands that pop up all over the place but in my personal opinion Giant are extremely popular and price-wise they are good value.

But yes mongoos and definatly becoming more popular, especially their freeride range i believe.

Kona is a good company in my opinion, some people don't like them and i've heard about some problems with their bikes.
Another reason people may not like them is because of their downhill bikes rear suspension triangle it has a large swing arm and the frame design is a bit unusual.
But yes they are a good company their cowan series is good for dirt jump / street and their downhill series are world cup winners.

Below is the 2008 Kona stab supreme, the RRP is 5000 in USA, not sure how much that would be in australian.
